Parent Attorney Conference

This course is co-sponsored by the Office of Indigent Defense Services.

The Parent Attorney Conference provides training for attorneys who represent respondents in abuse, neglect, dependency, and termination of parental rights proceedings. Topics will include legislative and case law updates (with advocacy pointers for defenders), current issues in TPR proceedings, a practical look at experts in juvenile AND matters, and what attorneys need to know about parenting evaluations. The Parent Attorney Conference will offer approximately 6.0 hours of CLE credit and qualifies for N.C. State Bar Child Welfare and Family Law specializations, subject to Bar approval. For information about other public defense education courses, visit our Public Defense Education site.

Format:

This year’s conference will be held in person at the School of Government.

CLE:

The Parent Attorney Conference will offer approximately 6.0 hours of CLE credit and qualifies for N.C. State Bar Child Welfare and Family Law specializations, subject to Bar approval.

Participants:

The Parent Attorney Conference is open to public defenders, appellate defenders, and other parent defenders who handle a significant number of appointed cases.

Fee:

There is no fee for IDS state employees. The registration fee for private assigned counsel is $200 per conference.

Scholarships:

A limited number of scholarships are available for private assigned and managed assigned counsel. If you are interested in applying, click here to complete the scholarship application. If you receive a scholarship, the registration fee of $200 is waived. You are responsible for your own travel, food and lodging expenses. Scholarships are awarded no later than two weeks after application submission.

Please apply as soon as possible, as scholarships are awarded on a first-come, first-served basis. The scholarship deadline is Wednesday August 7, 2024.
