Do You Hear What I Hear? The Art of Listening

This course is being rescheduled. Please click the link above to be notified when it's rescheduled.

In today’s digital age, truly listening to what others say is a lost art. Information flows at us in nano-second increments. Words flash across our screens as emotional triggers, rather than as true facts. To stop this information deluge long enough to really listen to spoken words can often feel like a waste of time. Yet to really listen – to focus on what someone else is saying – is a valuable leadership skill. Active listeners are effective local government leaders.

What does “active listening” mean?  Active listeners are those who listen for comprehension rather than judgement. These listeners focus on the message being delivered and work to identify its meaning , rather than interpreting their meaning or interrupting to make counter-arguments. This ability to listen for understanding is a gift; it is also a leadership enhancement skill that can be learned.

In this three-hour in-person interactive workshop, participants will learn and practice how to truly hear and respond to what others say.  Key concepts and skills covered in class include:

• Developing the mindset necessary for effective listening
• Using door openers to gain information and seek different perspectives
• Asking genuine questions to create greater understanding
• Checking assumptions to ensure intent
• Managing emotional reactions during difficult conversations
• Conveying respect for differing opinions
• Identifying underlying interests and areas of consensus

For those who serve in public office, the art of listening shows others that you care what they think, that you value their opinions, and that you are willing to listen to all perspectives. These skills foster the mutual understanding and breadth of thought needed to work with and through others, and will help you extend your leadership influence both in your community and beyond.
