Civil Commitment Conference

This course is co-sponsored by the UNC School of Government and the Office of Indigent Defense Services.

Session topics at this year's conference will include a reviewing the nuts and bolts of effective representation in IVC proceedings; client mental health and capacity; defense counsel’s responsibilities after a hearing is finished (including appeals); and what to expect in this practice with E-Courts.

The registration deadline is 5:00 p.m. on Friday, January 10.

Agenda: We will announce the final agenda at a later date closer to the program. 

Attendees: This conference is open to public defenders, appellate defenders, and private attorneys representing respondents in civil commitment.

CLE: This conference will offer approximately 5.50 hours of CLE, including 1.0 hour technology credit (pending State Bar approval). 

FEE: The registration fee for private assigned and managed assigned counsel is $175 for the Civil Commitment Conference. There is no fee for IDS state employees.

Scholarships: A limited number of scholarships are available for private assigned and managed assigned counsel. If you are interested in a scholarship for the Civil Commitment Conference – apply here. You must apply and receive approval for a scholarship before registering. Please apply as soon as possible. Scholarships are awarded no later than two weeks after application submission. The scholarship application deadline is Friday, January 3.
