2023 Master Clerks' Academy and New Clerks' Institute

    November 15–17, 2023

    These programs, held in person only, provide advanced continuing education designed to meet the needs of clerks, deputy clerks, and assistant clerks to city councils, boards of county commissioners, and other local government boards. Topics are selected based on their relevance and usefulness to clerks of all ranks and experience levels. The goal is to promote professional growth through sessions that deepen participants’ understanding of key subjects (e.g., open meetings, public records, board procedures, and public notice requirements) and develop practical skills to better enable participants to fulfill their important responsibilities.

    New Clerks' Institute (for clerks new to the profession)

    This one-day crash course on subjects vital to clerks’ work to municipal and county governing boards. Topics include open meetings law, public records law, meeting agendas and minutes, public notices, oaths of office, and board procedure fundamentals.

    Credit for Successful Completion of Master Clerks Academies

    The School of Government of The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is the International Institute of Municipal Clerks’ recognized provider of city and county clerks’ educational programming in North Carolina.  The School’s Clerks Academies may be used for credit towards the IIMC’s designations of Certified Municipal Clerk (CMC) and Master Municipal Clerk (MMC). The School also works cooperatively with the North Carolina Association of County Clerks and the North Carolina Association of Municipal Clerks to provide programs that earn credit under their respective state certification programs.

    The School awards points for successfully completing the 2023 Master Clerks Academy I and Master Clerks Academy II. Points are awarded separately for each Academy. To receive credit for an Academy, the student must attend all sessions as shown by the School’s electronic attendance monitoring system and must complete and submit an online evaluation form for that event. No partial credit can be awarded.

    Credit Awarded

    Master Clerks Academy I: 3.0 CMC/MMC points (6.0 hours).
    Master Clerks Academy II: 3.0 CMC/MMC points (6.0 hours)
    New Clerks Institute: 3.0 CMC/MMC points (6.0 hours).

    NC Association of Municipal Clerks and NC Association of County Clerks in their respective state certification programs is decided by each association in accordance with its own rules. Generally, the amount of credit allowed is based on the number of classroom hours attended.

    Clerks who join the IIMC and successfully complete the 2023 New Clerks Institute will earn three (3.0) CMC points.

    Clerks who obtain certifications from the NCAMC or NCACC and successfully complete the 2023 New Clerks Institute will receive six (6.0) hours of continuing education credit.

    To receive points/credit, the student must attend all sessions as shown by the School's electronic attendance monitoring system and complete and submit an online evaluation form for each event.

    There currently are no scheduled offerings of this course.
