Ben Hitchings, FAICP, CZO, is a School of Government Fellow and the principal of Green Heron Planning, LLC. He provides research, guidance, and teaching on land use and community planning to School clients throughout North Carolina.

A past president of the North Carolina chapter of the American Planning Association (APA-NC), Ben has more than 30 years of experience working on planning issues. He is the former planning director for the Town of Chapel Hill and the Town of Morrisville, North Carolina, and has developed award-winning plans at the local and regional level. Ben is the past chair of the American Planning Association's Chapter Presidents Council and currently serves on the APA Board of Directors. In 2016, APA-NC recognized him with its highest honor, the Philip P. Green Distinguished Service Award. In 2018, Ben was inducted into the College of Fellows of the American Institute of Certified Planners. He holds a bachelor's degree from Amherst College and a master’s degree in city and regional planning from UNC-Chapel Hill.
