
Belal Elrahal is an assistant professor of public law and government at the School of Government. In his role on the faculty, his work focuses primarily on motor vehicle and impaired driving law, as well as criminal proceedings before North Carolina Magistrates. In these areas, he teaches and advises judges, magistrates, prosecutors, defense attorneys, and law enforcement officers. He is the faculty lead for criminal law programming for magistrates and contributes regularly to the North Carolina Criminal Law Blog. He joined the School of Government in 2024.

Prior to joining the School, Elrahal practiced law in Rockingham County as part of a small general practice firm. He then worked in Charlotte at the Public Defender's Office, and briefly practiced in Durham in appellate law. Elrahal also currently serves as a judge advocate in the Judge Advocate General's Corps of the U.S. Army Reserves, where he has worked in administrative law, legal assistance, criminal prosecutions, and national security law.Â

Elrahal earned a bachelor's degree from Davidson College and a J.D. from the UNC School of Law. He is a member of the North Carolina State Bar.Â
