Using their own cases, participants will learn to develop a cohesive theory of defense on appeal and to use that theory in writing a persuasive statement of facts and legal argument. Sessions include “Transforming the facts and your theory of defense into a persuasive story”; “Writing a persuasive brief: Statement of facts”; and “Persuasive brief writing: Legal argument." This program combines large group instruction with small group workshops in which participants will work on their own cases. Criminal appellate attorneys and 7B appellate attorneys, who will have separate tracks, are invited to the program. The training will close with oral argument workshops. For information about other indigent defense education courses, visit our Indigent Defense Education site.
This program is open to appellate defenders and attorneys on the appellate appointment list maintained by the Office of the Appellate Defender. Questions about eligibility should be directed to the Office of the Appellate Defender at 919.560.3334 or Staples.S.Hughes@nccourts.org.
The Appellate Advocacy Training will be held at the UNC School of Government in Chapel Hill. See the Visitor Information page for directions and parking information.
