This workshop provides an overview of the governance and funding structures of public schools in North Carolina. It focuses particularly on the relationship between counties and local school administrative units. Participants will learn about the legal roles and responsibilities of counties for schools and the school budgeting and expenditure processes. As a group, we will identify common issues and brainstorm ways to better address them. The course is appropriate for any county or school official or employee (including board members, managers, superintendents, budget officers and finance officers), as well as any member of the community, who wishes to learn more about school funding decisions and funding options at the local level.

This is a 201 Level course in the Local Elected Leaders Academy (LELA). Elected officials participating in the LELA program receive 6 recognition credits towards their Master level certificate.

County Commissioners receive a 20% discount on the registration fee through a grant from the NC Association of County Commissioners. This discount is applied at registration.
